What is CBT?

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a talk therapy that looks at how your thoughts, feelings, body and actions affect one another. The HSE describes it as helping you understand and change how you think about your life and unhelpful patterns of behaviour, with goals set alongside your therapist (HSE, 2025).

A situation sparks a thought. The thought shapes a feeling, the feeling shows up in the body, and the body nudges what you do next. What you do then shapes the next situation. That is the five-part cycle in the graphic at the top of this page, and CBT works at the point where you can notice the thought and test it.

CBT works in the gap between what happens and what you do next.

The HSE recommends CBT-based guided self-help for some types of depression, anxiety, panic disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder, or OCD (HSE, 2025).

How is CBT-informed counselling different from a CBT course?

A structured CBT course follows set modules over a set period: the HSE's guided digital CBT programme, SilverCloud, usually runs over 6 to 8 weeks (HSE, 2025). CBT-informed counselling with Rosemary Chaney uses the same tools inside open 50-minute sessions, with no fixed number of sessions.

Course. A set run of modules, usually over 6 to 8 weeks, with a supporter checking in weekly. Stops 7 and 8 are dashed because many courses finish sooner.

Counselling. The focus is agreed in each session. When something new comes up, the work loops back to it, as the dashed arrow shows.

What happens in a CBT-informed session?

Each CBT-informed session with Rosemary Chaney in Gorey lasts 50 minutes and costs €75. You agree a focus, look closely at one recent moment, and decide together whether any practice between sessions would help. There is no fixed number of sessions; progress is reviewed as you go.

  1. Agree a focusWhat would you like to be different? This can change as you go.
  2. Choose a recent momentOne specific time the pattern showed up, rather than the whole story at once.
  3. Map itSituation, thought, feeling, body and action, like the cycle at the top of this page.
  4. Test the thoughtWhat supports it, what does not fit, and what else could be true.
  5. Pick a next stepSometimes a small experiment before the next session, only if it suits your goal.
  6. Review togetherCheck what is changing, and adjust the focus.

A session usually follows this shape; it is a guide, not a script. To cancel an in-person session, give at least 48 hours' notice; online sessions need 24 hours. The HSE notes that if the fit with a therapist does not feel right, you should say so (HSE, 2025).

Try a thought record

A thought record is the worksheet CBT uses to slow a moment down. What you type stays on this screen: nothing is saved or sent, and it clears when you leave the page.

Fill in what you can, then move the second slider to compare before and now.

If writing this brings up something heavy, stop and talk to someone. Samaritans: 116 123, any time.

Frequently asked questions about CBT in Gorey

Does Rosemary offer CBT in Gorey?

Yes. Rosemary Chaney uses CBT within integrative counselling at Bodhi, 14 Main Street, Gorey, and holds a Certificate in CBT from PCI College. Sessions last 50 minutes and cost €75. Because her approach is integrative, CBT tools are used where they help, alongside other ways of working, rather than as a fixed programme.

Will I get homework?

Not automatically. Practice between sessions, such as noting a thought or trying a small experiment, is agreed with you only when it supports your goal. The HSE notes that CBT may include tasks between sessions; in CBT-informed counselling with Rosemary those tasks stay optional and are shaped around your week.

How many CBT sessions will I need?

There is no fixed or guaranteed number. You and Rosemary review progress together and decide when to continue, change focus or stop. For comparison, the HSE's guided digital CBT programme usually runs over 6 to 8 weeks, and the HSE notes that progress in talk therapy often builds gradually over several sessions.

Is CBT the same as psychotherapy?

No. CBT is one type of psychotherapy, and the HSE lists others such as person-centred and psychodynamic therapy. Rosemary is a psychotherapist who uses CBT as one of several approaches, choosing what fits the person in front of her rather than applying a single method to everyone who comes through the door.

Can I book CBT for my child or teenager?

No. The Gorey practice works with adults aged 18 and over. For anyone under 18, Rosemary recommends a therapist trained in adolescent psychotherapy, who will know how to work with young people and their families. Adults aged 18 and over can book a 50-minute session in Gorey for €75 online or by phone.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book a 50-minute session in Gorey directly online, or by phone on 087 458 0150. A referral is only needed for HSE services such as SilverCloud, the HSE's guided digital CBT programme, which takes referrals from GPs and other HSE services including Counselling in Primary Care and Jigsaw.

Can CBT help with anxiety?

CBT is widely used for anxiety, and the HSE recommends CBT-based guided self-help for some types of anxiety, depression, panic disorder and OCD. In counselling with Rosemary, CBT tools for worry and avoidance sit inside a wider conversation about your life. A 50-minute session in Gorey costs €75.

Can I have CBT-informed sessions online?

Yes. Rosemary offers secure video sessions anywhere in Ireland for €75 for 50 minutes, the same fee as in Gorey. Online sessions need 24 hours' notice to cancel, compared with 48 hours for in-person sessions at Bodhi. Choose the online option when you book, or call 087 458 0150 to ask first.

What should I bring to the first session?

Nothing is required. Some people like to note one or two recent moments when the pattern showed up, because CBT works best with a specific example. Arrive at Bodhi, 14 Main Street, a few minutes before your 50-minute session. If you use the thought record on this page, you can bring a printed copy.
