What this work can help with

You don't have to know exactly what's wrong.

Most young adults arrive knowing something is off, not necessarily what to call it. Any of these might sound familiar:

  • College & exam stress

End-of-semester pressure, perfectionism, procrastination and burnout.

  • Anxiety

General, social and health anxiety — including the worry that never quite switches off.

  • Low mood & depression

The heaviness that gets in the way of school, friends and the things they used to enjoy.

  • Low self-esteem

The inner critic, comparison to peers, and body image worries.

  • Bullying & social media

In-person and online — making sense of it, and rebuilding self-worth.

  • Family-of-origin patterns

The dynamics you grew up with — and the ones you'd like to leave behind.

  • Friendship & relationships

Fall-outs, loneliness, first relationships, and difficult break-ups.

  • Sexuality & identity

A safe, non-judgemental space for questions about who they are.

  • Grief & loss

The death of a person or a pet, or another loss that hasn't been fully spoken.

  • Anger

Understanding what's underneath it, and finding ways to express it that don't cost so much.

The work itself

A place to talk, on your terms.

Everyone needs help from time to time, and counselling can be a real support. It helps to talk to someone outside your usual circle in a confidential, non-judgemental setting where you really feel that you are being listened to. Problems and worries often affect how you think and feel — which then affects how you behave, and that can cause further problems.

CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) is a talking therapy that's often useful at this stage of life. It helps you understand how your thoughts affect your feelings, and how your feelings affect your behaviour, so you can identify unhelpful patterns, leave them behind, and replace them with new, more effective coping strategies.

The focus is entirely on you. I take my time. I don't hurry anyone to talk, or make them explain things they aren't ready to. Most people tell me pretty quickly that it's a relief to be somewhere they don't have to perform.

Please note: I work with clients aged 18 and over. Under-18s should work with a therapist specifically trained in adolescent psychotherapy — I'm happy to point you toward colleagues who do.

“People generally feel better, and do better, when they learn to cope better.”
— Rosemary Chaney, MA, IACP

Common questions

Frequently asked

The questions young adults in Dublin, Wexford and across Ireland most commonly ask before booking.

How much does counselling for young adults cost in Dublin and Wexford?+

A 50-minute session is €85 in Dublin and €75 at the Gorey (Co. Wexford) practice or securely online. Payment is at the end of each session — no hidden fees, no long contracts. Full details are on the fees page.

Where can I find a counsellor for young adults in Dublin?+

Rosemary Chaney sees young adults in Dublin, as well as at her Gorey (Co. Wexford) practice and by secure video across Ireland. Dublin appointments can be booked directly; evening slots are usually available.

Do you offer counselling for young adults in Wexford?+

Yes. Young adults travel to the Gorey practice from Gorey, Enniscorthy, Wexford town, Ferns, Courtown, Arklow and the wider south-east. It's a short drive from most of Co. Wexford and north Wicklow, and online sessions cover the rest of Ireland.

What age do you see?+

18 and over. For under-18s, this work should be done with a therapist trained in adolescent psychotherapy — I'm happy to suggest colleagues who specialise in that age group.

What can counselling help with at this stage of life?+

Anxiety (general, social and health), low mood and depression, self-esteem, life transitions (starting college, leaving home, first jobs, break-ups), family-of-origin patterns, sexuality and identity, grief, anger, and self-harm worries. A confidential space outside your usual circle often makes the biggest difference.

What kind of therapy do you use?+

A gentle, integrative approach, drawing on CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) — a talking therapy that helps you notice how thoughts affect feelings, and feelings affect behaviour, so you can leave old patterns behind and build new coping strategies.

Is it confidential?+

Yes — within the standard IACP ethical limits, which I explain fully at the first session. As an adult (18+) client, what you share stays between us, other than the rare exceptions the IACP framework requires.

I'm not sure I want to come — what can I do?+

That's very normal. Often the most helpful first step is a short phone or email exchange with me so you can get a feel for what a first session would be like. Nobody is pushed to talk before they're ready.

How long does it take to see a difference?+

Many people feel some relief within two or three sessions simply from having a place to talk that isn't home, college or a friend group. Deeper change — patterns around anxiety, mood or self-esteem — takes longer, and we agree the pace together.

How many sessions will I need?+

Every person is different. Some come for six to eight sessions to work through a specific difficulty such as a break-up, a bereavement or exam pressure; others benefit from longer-term work. There is no fixed course — you're free to pause or finish at any point.

Can sessions be online?+

Yes. Secure video sessions work well and can feel less exposing than travelling to a therapy room. All you need is a private space and a reliable connection.

Can counselling help with college exam stress?+

Yes — a common reason young adults come, particularly around end-of-semester exams and final-year projects. We look at what's fuelling the pressure, practical strategies for managing it, and the underlying self-talk that often makes it worse.

Can counselling help with bullying or social media?+

Yes. Difficulties online and off — group chats, comparison, harassment, ghosting — are a frequent presenting issue. Sessions give you space to make sense of what's happening, rebuild self-worth, and decide what you'd like to do next, at your own pace.

Do you see LGBTQ+ clients?+

Yes — warmly and without judgement. Questions of sexuality, gender and identity are welcome, and Rosemary works to IACP ethical standards which include respect for diversity as a core commitment.

What if I'm having thoughts of self-harm?+

Please contact your GP straight away, and in an emergency go to your nearest A&E or call 112/999. You can also reach the Samaritans free on 116 123, or Text About It free on 50808 (both available in Ireland, 24/7). Counselling can be a valuable support alongside — not instead of — appropriate medical care.
