How trauma can show up

If the past is still living in you.

Trauma doesn't always announce itself. Sometimes it looks like being constantly on edge, or completely numb. Sometimes it's a relationship pattern you can't break, or a memory that still lands like it's happening now.

  • Intrusive memories or flashbacks
  • Nightmares and disturbed sleep
  • Feeling constantly on edge
  • Numbness or feeling detached
  • Avoiding people, places or reminders
  • Panic, anxiety or a short fuse
  • Shame, guilt or self-blame
  • Difficulty trusting others
  • A sense of being stuck in the past
  • Physical tension and startle responses

How we work

Specialist training, gentle pace.

Rosemary's particular specialisation is trauma. Rather than one fixed method, she draws on three complementary approaches — always agreed with you, always at your pace.

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy

A body-based trauma model. Trauma lives in the body as well as the mind — so this work gently tracks posture, tension and automatic reactions, helping your nervous system complete what it never got to finish. Rosemary completed Levels 1 & 2, trained in Ireland by the Boulder, Colorado team.

EMDR (Europe Standard)

A structured, well-researched method for processing distressing memories. Using guided bilateral stimulation, EMDR helps the brain file painful experiences away as past events rather than present threats. Rosemary completed EMDR Europe Standard Training in 2022.

Integrative talking therapy

Trauma work sits on a foundation of trust. Drawing on humanistic and psychodynamic training, an MA in Humanistic & Integrative Psychotherapy, and CBT, Rosemary offers a warm, non-judgemental space where the pace is always yours.

Getting started

Beginning is the hardest step.

  1. 01

    Get in touch

Send an enquiry, email, or call. I'll reply personally, usually within one working day, to arrange a first conversation.

  2. 02

    First session

We talk about what's bringing you here and what you'd like to change. I'll explain how EMDR and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy work, and answer any questions.

  3. 03

    Trauma-focused work

If it feels right, we begin structured trauma work — at a pace you set. Many clients notice the past losing its grip as the work progresses.

The work itself

Safety first — always.

Trauma therapy begins with safety. Before any structured work happens, we spend time making sure you feel steady — in the sessions themselves and in your daily life. There is no rush to get to the difficult material, and no expectation that you tell the whole story. In fact, with EMDR and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, you often don't need to.

EMDR helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they feel like things that happened, rather than things that are still happening. Sensorimotor Psychotherapy works with the body — the held tension, the bracing, the collapse — that talking alone often can't reach. Both are gentle, structured and collaborative, and both only go as fast as you are comfortable with.

Rosemary has been an accredited counsellor and psychotherapist since 2005, holds an MA in Humanistic & Integrative Psychotherapy, and trained in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy with the Boulder, Colorado team and in EMDR to Europe Standard level. If you are looking for a trauma therapist in Dublin or Wexford, or prefer to work online, you are welcome to get in touch and ask anything before deciding.

Common questions

Frequently asked

Do you offer trauma therapy in Dublin?+

Yes. Rosemary Chaney sees clients for trauma therapy and EMDR in Dublin as well as at her practice in Gorey, Co. Wexford. If neither location suits, secure online trauma sessions are available anywhere in Ireland, so you can do the work from home.

Do you provide EMDR in Wexford?+

Yes. Rosemary has completed EMDR Europe Standard Training (2022) and offers EMDR sessions at the Gorey practice, in Dublin, and online. EMDR is one of the approaches she draws on in specialist trauma work, alongside Sensorimotor Psychotherapy.

What is EMDR, and how does it work?+

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured, well-researched therapy that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they lose much of their emotional charge. Instead of talking through events in detail, EMDR uses guided bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements) while you briefly bring the memory to mind. Many people find memories that once felt raw begin to feel more distant and settled.

What is Sensorimotor Psychotherapy?+

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy is a body-based trauma model. It works with the understanding that trauma is held not only in our thoughts and memories but in the body itself — in posture, tension, and automatic reactions. Rosemary is a graduate of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Levels 1 & 2 (trained in Ireland by the Boulder, Colorado team), and uses it to help clients notice and gently work with these body-level patterns at a pace that feels safe.

Will I have to talk in detail about what happened to me?+

No. One of the advantages of body-based and EMDR approaches is that they do not require you to recount every detail of what happened. You stay in control of what you share and how much. Nothing is rushed, and the pace is always agreed with you.

What kinds of experiences can trauma therapy help with?+

Rosemary works with adults on the aftermath of childhood abuse and neglect, domestic violence, sexual abuse, accidents, sudden loss, bullying, and other experiences that continue to affect daily life. Trauma does not have to be one dramatic event — it can also be the cumulative effect of things that happened over years. She also works with the anxiety, depression, anger and low self-worth that often travel with it.

How is trauma therapy different from general counselling?+

General counselling offers space to talk through whatever is troubling you. Specialist trauma therapy adds specific, structured methods — EMDR and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy — that target how traumatic memories and body-level stress responses are stored. Many clients do both: a foundation of talking therapy, with trauma-focused work woven in when it feels right.

How much does trauma therapy and EMDR cost?+

Individual sessions are €75 per 50 minutes in Gorey and online, and €85 in Dublin — the same fees as general counselling, with no extra charge for trauma-focused work. Full details are on the fees page.

How do I know if trauma therapy is right for me?+

You don't need a diagnosis or a referral to start. If something from your past still affects how you feel, react or relate to others, a first conversation is the simplest way to find out. Rosemary will listen, answer your questions about EMDR and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and suggest an approach that fits — with no obligation to continue.

How do I book a trauma therapy or EMDR session?+

Use the Book a session button on this page, call 087 458 0150, or email Info@RCpsychotherapy.ie. Rosemary replies personally, usually within one working day, and will help arrange a first session in Dublin, Gorey or online.
