Why do couples keep having the same argument?

Often it is the pattern, not the topic. In the pursue–withdraw pattern, one partner reaches for closeness and the other pulls back for calm, and each move fuels the next. A 2014 review of 74 studies with more than 14,000 participants linked it to lower relationship satisfaction, less intimacy and poorer communication (Schrodt, Witt and Shimkowski, 2014).

Each move makes sense on its own; together they keep the loop turning, and each turn grows a little wider. Source: Schrodt, Witt and Shimkowski, Communication Monographs, 2014.

In sessions with Rosemary, the aim is to name this loop together, so it becomes a problem you face side by side rather than an argument about who started it. Nobody is declared the winner.

Frequently asked questions about couples counselling in Gorey

Can I come on my own if my partner will not attend?

Yes. You can book an individual session in Gorey, which costs €75 for 50 minutes. The HSE notes that relationship counselling can still help when only one person attends. Working on your side of a pattern can change how the whole pattern runs. If your partner decides to join later, you can book a 60-minute couples session together for €100.

Will Rosemary take sides?

No. Rosemary's role is to keep the conversation fair, not to decide who is right. Each partner gets room to describe what is happening for them, and the focus stays on the pattern between you rather than on a verdict. Rosemary has been IACP accredited since 2005 and works to the IACP Code of Ethics and Practice.

How many couples sessions will we need?

There is no fixed number. You decide together after each 60-minute session whether to book another, and there is no package to buy. The HSE notes that progress in talk therapy often comes gradually and can take several sessions, so Rosemary reviews with you how things are going and what, if anything, needs to change.

Can couples counselling help after an affair?

Yes. Affairs and damaged trust are among the reasons couples come to Rosemary in Gorey. Sessions give both partners room to say what happened and what it meant, without the hour turning into a trial. Whether you rebuild or part, the aim is to understand the pattern between you rather than to assign blame.

Do we have to be married?

No. Rosemary sees adult couples whether they are married, engaged, living together or living apart. Marriage counselling and couples counselling are the same service here, at the same fee of €100 for 60 minutes in Gorey. Both partners need to be 18 or over, and either of you can make the first enquiry.

How should we prepare for the first session?

You do not need to prepare anything. It can help to think about what you would each like to be different, and to arrive at Bodhi, 14 Main Street, a few minutes early. If there is something you feel unable to say in front of your partner, contact Rosemary privately on 087 458 0150 before the session.

Is what we say confidential?

Yes, within limits that are explained at the start. Rosemary works to the IACP Code of Ethics and Practice, which treats information shared in sessions as confidential. The limits, such as a serious risk to someone's safety, are set out on the confidentiality page of this website, and you can ask about them before you book.

Are evening couples sessions available in Gorey?

Sessions run Monday to Friday, 9am to 7pm, and evening sessions are available by arrangement. Couples often need a time that suits two working days, so mention it when you book or call 087 458 0150. Each couples session lasts 60 minutes, so a 6pm start finishes at 7pm.

Can counselling help us decide whether to separate?

Yes. Separation decisions are part of couples work with Rosemary, and counselling gives you both space to decide without being pushed either way. If you have already decided and now need to agree parenting, money or the home, the Legal Aid Board's free Family Mediation Service is built for that step.
