## Key takeaways

- Sessions take place at Bodhi, 14 Main Street, Gorey, Co. Wexford, Y25 E8N5.

## Do we need couples counselling?

You do not need to be in crisis to book. Couples come to Rosemary Chaney in Gorey when the same argument keeps returning, trust has been hurt, or a decision about the future has stalled. The HSE describes relationship counselling as a way to understand each other's needs and communicate better ([HSE, 2025](https://www2.hse.ie/mental-health/services-support/talk-therapy/types/)).

For Rosemary's wider relationship work in Gorey and Dublin, see [relationship counselling with Rosemary Chaney](https://rcpsychotherapy.ie/relationship-counselling).

This is a fit if

- You are both adults, aged 18 or over, married or not.
- The same argument, silence or distance keeps coming back.
- Trust has been hurt, for example by an affair, and you want to understand what happened.
- You keep getting stuck on a decision, such as whether to stay together.
- One of you is ready to make the first enquiry.

This may not be the right first step if

- Either of you feels afraid of the other or cannot speak freely at home.
- Someone is at immediate risk of harm. Call 999 or 112.
- You have already decided to separate and only need to agree arrangements for children, money or the home.
- Either partner is under 18.
- You are looking for a diagnosis, medication or emergency care.

Not a fit? Talk to Rosemary privately first on 087 458 0150, use the safety contacts further down this page, or, for separation arrangements, contact the Legal Aid Board's free family mediation service.

Find your first step

Three questions, answered privately on this screen. Nothing you choose is saved or sent.

- Does either of you feel afraid of the other, or unable to say what you think at home? Options: No; Yes; Not sure.
- Will you both come? Options: Yes, both of us; One of us is not sure yet; Only I will come.
- What are you hoping for? Options: To get on better; To decide whether to stay together; We have decided to separate and need to agree arrangements.

Table: How the first-step guide decides

| If you answer | The guide suggests |
|---|---|
| Someone feels afraid or cannot speak freely, or you are not sure | A private conversation with Rosemary first, plus Women's Aid, Men's Aid and emergency numbers |
| You have decided to separate and need to agree arrangements | The Legal Aid Board's free Family Mediation Service |
| Only one of you will come | An individual session: €75 for 50 minutes in Gorey |
| One of you is not sure yet | One enquiry for both, one 60-minute session, then decide together |
| You both want to come | A 60-minute couples session at Bodhi, Gorey: €100 |

## Why do couples keep having the same argument?

Often it is the pattern, not the topic. In the pursue–withdraw pattern, one partner reaches for closeness and the other pulls back for calm, and each move fuels the next. A 2014 review of 74 studies with more than 14,000 participants linked it to lower relationship satisfaction, less intimacy and poorer communication ([Schrodt, Witt and Shimkowski, 2014](https://doi.org/10.1080/03637751.2013.813632)).

Figure: The pursue–withdraw loop between two partners. A loop where one partner reaches and the other steps back; a review of 74 studies linked it to lower satisfaction.

Caption: Each move makes sense on its own; together they keep the loop turning, and each turn grows a little wider. Source: [Schrodt, Witt and Shimkowski, Communication Monographs, 2014](https://doi.org/10.1080/03637751.2013.813632).

In sessions with Rosemary, the aim is to name this loop together, so it becomes a problem you face side by side rather than an argument about who started it. Nobody is declared the winner.

Table: Data behind this graphic: the four moves of the loop

| Move | What happens | What the move is protecting |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | One partner raises the issue, asks again or follows it up. | Closeness |
| 2 | The other goes quiet, changes the subject or leaves the room. | Calm |
| 3 | The reaching gets louder, because the distance has grown. | Closeness |
| 4 | The stepping back goes further, because the pressure has grown. | Calm |

Evidence: a review of 74 studies with more than 14,000 participants (Schrodt, Witt and Shimkowski, Communication Monographs, 2014).

## What happens in the first couples counselling session?

The first session lasts 60 minutes at Bodhi, 14 Main Street, Gorey, and both partners attend. Each of you describes what brought you, Rosemary asks questions to understand the pattern between you, and you decide together whether to book again. Nobody is asked to prove a point.

1. **Book**: One of you books online, choosing couples counselling and the Gorey practice. (€100, paid at booking)
2. **Arrive together**: Come to Bodhi, 14 Main Street, Gorey, Y25 E8N5. (Town centre)
3. **Agree how you will work**: Rosemary explains how sessions run, including what stays confidential and the limits of that.
4. **Each of you is heard**: Each partner describes what brought you, while Rosemary keeps the conversation fair.
5. **Look at the pattern**: Rosemary asks questions to understand what happens between you, not to decide who is right.
6. **Decide together**: You choose whether to book another session. (No package)

The HSE notes that talk therapy sessions usually last about an hour ([HSE, 2025](https://www2.hse.ie/mental-health/services-support/talk-therapy/what-expect/)). A couples session with Rosemary is a full 60 minutes, and you need to give at least 48 hours' notice to cancel an in-person session.

## When is couples counselling not the right first step?

When anyone in the relationship feels afraid, controlled or unable to speak freely, a joint session may not be the right first step. Talk to Rosemary privately before booking, and use a specialist service. Women's Aid's national freephone helpline, 1800 341 900, is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week ([Women's Aid](https://www.womensaid.ie/get-help/talk-to-us/)).

- If either of you feels afraid of the other, or cannot speak freely at home, raise it privately with Rosemary before booking a joint session. Individual support may need to come first.
- If you are being controlled, threatened or hurt, call Women's Aid on 1800 341 900, free, 24 hours a day, or Men's Aid on 01 554 3811, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
- If someone is in immediate danger, call 999 or 112.
- If you or your partner are thinking about suicide or self-harm, call Samaritans on 116 123 or Pieta on 1800 247 247, free, any time.
- If you have decided to separate and need to agree arrangements, the Legal Aid Board's [free Family Mediation Service](https://legalaidboard.ie/about-the-legal-aid-board/media-and-speeches/latest-news/legal-aid-board-launches-new-family-mediation-callback-service/) is designed for that step.
- If your partner will not come, book an individual session instead: €75 for 50 minutes in Gorey.
- If either of you is under 18, this service is for adults. Rosemary refers under-18s to a therapist trained in adolescent psychotherapy.
- If you need to cancel, give at least 48 hours' notice for an in-person session.

RC Psychotherapy is not a crisis service. If you need help now:

- 999 or 112: Immediate danger
- 1800 341 900: [Women's Aid](https://www.womensaid.ie/get-help/talk-to-us/), 24 hours
- 01 554 3811: [Men's Aid](https://www.mensaid.ie/), Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm

## Frequently asked questions about couples counselling in Gorey

### Can I come on my own if my partner will not attend?

Yes. You can book an individual session in Gorey, which costs €75 for 50 minutes. The HSE notes that relationship counselling can still help when only one person attends. Working on your side of a pattern can change how the whole pattern runs. If your partner decides to join later, you can book a 60-minute couples session together for €100.

### Will Rosemary take sides?

No. Rosemary's role is to keep the conversation fair, not to decide who is right. Each partner gets room to describe what is happening for them, and the focus stays on the pattern between you rather than on a verdict. Rosemary has been IACP accredited since 2005 and works to the IACP Code of Ethics and Practice.

### How many couples sessions will we need?

There is no fixed number. You decide together after each 60-minute session whether to book another, and there is no package to buy. The HSE notes that progress in talk therapy often comes gradually and can take several sessions, so Rosemary reviews with you how things are going and what, if anything, needs to change.

### Can couples counselling help after an affair?

Yes. Affairs and damaged trust are among the reasons couples come to Rosemary in Gorey. Sessions give both partners room to say what happened and what it meant, without the hour turning into a trial. Whether you rebuild or part, the aim is to understand the pattern between you rather than to assign blame.

### Do we have to be married?

No. Rosemary sees adult couples whether they are married, engaged, living together or living apart. Marriage counselling and couples counselling are the same service here, at the same fee of €100 for 60 minutes in Gorey. Both partners need to be 18 or over, and either of you can make the first enquiry.

### How should we prepare for the first session?

You do not need to prepare anything. It can help to think about what you would each like to be different, and to arrive at Bodhi, 14 Main Street, a few minutes early. If there is something you feel unable to say in front of your partner, contact Rosemary privately on 087 458 0150 before the session.

### Is what we say confidential?

Yes, within limits that are explained at the start. Rosemary works to the IACP Code of Ethics and Practice, which treats information shared in sessions as confidential. The limits, such as a serious risk to someone's safety, are set out on the confidentiality page of this website, and you can ask about them before you book.

### Are evening couples sessions available in Gorey?

Sessions run Monday to Friday, 9am to 7pm, and evening sessions are available by arrangement. Couples often need a time that suits two working days, so mention it when you book or call 087 458 0150. Each couples session lasts 60 minutes, so a 6pm start finishes at 7pm.

### Can counselling help us decide whether to separate?

Yes. Separation decisions are part of couples work with Rosemary, and counselling gives you both space to decide without being pushed either way. If you have already decided and now need to agree parenting, money or the home, the Legal Aid Board's free Family Mediation Service is built for that step.
