By Rosemary Chaney, MA, IACP accredited counsellor and psychotherapist. Last updated 9 October 2026.

CBT here means cognitive behavioural therapy, not a computer-based test. This page covers adult counselling in Gorey, Co. Wexford, not Gorey in Jersey.

Figure: The CBT cycle: situation, thought, feeling, body, action. A five-part loop: a situation sparks a thought, which shapes a feeling, the body and what you do next.

Caption: Change the thought and the rest of the loop can change with it. Everyday examples only, not an assessment.

Map a moment

1. Situation: A friend has not replied to your message all day.
2. Thought: They are annoyed with me.
3. Feeling: Anxious and low.
4. Body: Tight chest, restless, checking the phone.
5. Action: You send another message, then avoid them for a week.

## Is CBT-informed counselling right for you?

CBT-informed counselling with Rosemary Chaney in Gorey suits adults who notice a pattern repeating and want both practical tools and room to talk. It is not a crisis service, a diagnosis or a self-guided course. Sessions are 50 minutes, €75, for people aged 18 and over.

For an overview of Rosemary's individual work, see [counselling and psychotherapy with Rosemary Chaney](https://rcpsychotherapy.ie/general-counselling).

Table: Who CBT-informed counselling in Gorey suits

| This is a fit if | This may not be the right first step if |
|---|---|
| You are 18 or over and can come to Gorey, or join online. | You are under 18. |
| A pattern such as worry, avoidance or low mood keeps repeating. | You are in crisis or at risk of harm right now. |
| You want practical steps, and room to talk about what sits underneath them. | You want a diagnosis or medication. |
| You are open to small experiments between sessions, if they suit your goal. | You want a self-guided online course rather than a counsellor. |
| You would rather review progress as you go than sign up for a fixed course. | Trauma is at the centre of what you are carrying. |

Not the right fit? For under-18s, Rosemary recommends a therapist trained in adolescent psychotherapy. For a self-guided online course, ask your GP about the HSE's SilverCloud programme. For trauma, see [trauma therapy with EMDR and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy](https://rcpsychotherapy.ie/trauma-therapy). In a crisis, call 999 or 112, Samaritans on 116 123 or Pieta on 1800 247 247.

## What is CBT?

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a talk therapy that looks at how your thoughts, feelings, body and actions affect one another. The HSE describes it as helping you understand and change how you think about your life and unhelpful patterns of behaviour, with goals set alongside your therapist ([HSE, 2025](https://www2.hse.ie/mental-health/services-support/talk-therapy/types/)).

A situation sparks a thought. The thought shapes a feeling, the feeling shows up in the body, and the body nudges what you do next. What you do then shapes the next situation. That is the five-part cycle in the graphic at the top of this page, and CBT works at the point where you can notice the thought and test it.

CBT works in the gap between what happens and what you do next.

The HSE recommends CBT-based guided self-help for some types of depression, anxiety, panic disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder, or OCD ([HSE, 2025](https://www2.hse.ie/mental-health/services-support/talk-therapy/types/)).

Table: Data behind the cycle graphic: the three example moments

| Situation | First thought | A different thought | What changes in action |
|---|---|---|---|
| A friend has not replied to your message all day. | They are annoyed with me. | They are probably busy. They replied quickly last time. | You send another message, then avoid them for a week. Instead: You get on with your evening and see them at the weekend. |
| Your manager asks for a quick word tomorrow morning. | I have done something wrong. | It could be about anything. I can ask what it is about. | You go over every email late into the night. Instead: You send a short reply asking what to bring. |
| You are invited to a busy party in town on Saturday. | I will have nothing to say. | I can stay for an hour and talk to the two people I know. | You cancel at the last minute. Relief, then the belief grows. Instead: You go for an hour and leave on your own terms. |

## How is CBT-informed counselling different from a CBT course?

A structured CBT course follows set modules over a set period: the HSE's guided digital CBT programme, SilverCloud, usually runs over 6 to 8 weeks ([HSE, 2025](https://www2.hse.ie/mental-health/services-support/silvercloud-cbt/)). CBT-informed counselling with Rosemary Chaney uses the same tools inside open 50-minute sessions, with no fixed number of sessions.

Figure: A structured CBT course compared with CBT-informed counselling. A course runs straight through 6 to 8 weeks; counselling loops back to whatever matters most.

Caption: A course runs in a straight line; counselling loops back to whatever matters most that week. Source for the course length: [HSE, SilverCloud, 2025](https://www2.hse.ie/mental-health/services-support/silvercloud-cbt/).

Course. A set run of modules, usually over 6 to 8 weeks, with a supporter checking in weekly. Stops 7 and 8 are dashed because many courses finish sooner.

Counselling. The focus is agreed in each session. When something new comes up, the work loops back to it, as the dashed arrow shows.

Table: A structured CBT course and CBT-informed counselling compared

| Criterion | Structured course: HSE SilverCloud | CBT-informed counselling with Rosemary |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Online modules worked through in your own time | 50-minute sessions in person at Bodhi, Gorey, or online |
| Length | Usually 6 to 8 weeks | No fixed number; reviewed together |
| Support | A trained supporter checks in weekly | A qualified counsellor in every session |
| Getting started | Referral from a GP, Primary Care Psychology, Counselling in Primary Care, a community mental health team or Jigsaw | Book directly online, or call 087 458 0150 |
| Between sessions | Course tasks | Practice agreed only if it helps your goal |
| Other approaches | CBT only | CBT alongside humanistic, psychodynamic, EMDR and Sensorimotor work |
| Fee | Provided by the HSE, through referral | €75 per 50-minute session |

## What happens in a CBT-informed session?

Each CBT-informed session with Rosemary Chaney in Gorey lasts 50 minutes and costs €75. You agree a focus, look closely at one recent moment, and decide together whether any practice between sessions would help. There is no fixed number of sessions; progress is reviewed as you go.

1. **Agree a focus**: What would you like to be different? This can change as you go.
2. **Choose a recent moment**: One specific time the pattern showed up, rather than the whole story at once.
3. **Map it**: Situation, thought, feeling, body and action, like the cycle at the top of this page.
4. **Test the thought**: What supports it, what does not fit, and what else could be true.
5. **Pick a next step**: Sometimes a small experiment before the next session, only if it suits your goal.
6. **Review together**: Check what is changing, and adjust the focus.

A session usually follows this shape; it is a guide, not a script. To cancel an in-person session, give at least 48 hours' notice; online sessions need 24 hours. The HSE notes that if the fit with a therapist does not feel right, you should say so ([HSE, 2025](https://www2.hse.ie/mental-health/services-support/talk-therapy/what-expect/)).

Try a thought record

A thought record is the worksheet CBT uses to slow a moment down. What you type stays on this screen: nothing is saved or sent, and it clears when you leave the page.

- What happened?
- What went through your mind?
- What did you feel?
- How strong was it? (0 to 10)
- What supports the thought?
- What does not fit the thought?
- A more balanced thought
- How strong is the feeling now? (0 to 10)

If writing this brings up something heavy, stop and talk to someone. Samaritans: 116 123, any time.

## How does CBT fit with Rosemary's other approaches?

CBT sits alongside humanistic and psychodynamic counselling, and where trauma is central she may discuss EMDR or Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. She has been IACP accredited since 2005 and an IACP accredited supervisor since 2012.

## Frequently asked questions about CBT in Gorey

### Does Rosemary offer CBT in Gorey?

Yes. Rosemary Chaney uses CBT within integrative counselling at Bodhi, 14 Main Street, Gorey, and holds a Certificate in CBT from PCI College. Sessions last 50 minutes and cost €75. Because her approach is integrative, CBT tools are used where they help, alongside other ways of working, rather than as a fixed programme.

### Will I get homework?

Not automatically. Practice between sessions, such as noting a thought or trying a small experiment, is agreed with you only when it supports your goal. The HSE notes that CBT may include tasks between sessions; in CBT-informed counselling with Rosemary those tasks stay optional and are shaped around your week.

### How many CBT sessions will I need?

There is no fixed or guaranteed number. You and Rosemary review progress together and decide when to continue, change focus or stop. For comparison, the HSE's guided digital CBT programme usually runs over 6 to 8 weeks, and the HSE notes that progress in talk therapy often builds gradually over several sessions.

### Is CBT the same as psychotherapy?

No. CBT is one type of psychotherapy, and the HSE lists others such as person-centred and psychodynamic therapy. Rosemary is a psychotherapist who uses CBT as one of several approaches, choosing what fits the person in front of her rather than applying a single method to everyone who comes through the door.

### Can I book CBT for my child or teenager?

No. The Gorey practice works with adults aged 18 and over. For anyone under 18, Rosemary recommends a therapist trained in adolescent psychotherapy, who will know how to work with young people and their families. Adults aged 18 and over can book a 50-minute session in Gorey for €75 online or by phone.

### Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book a 50-minute session in Gorey directly online, or by phone on 087 458 0150. A referral is only needed for HSE services such as SilverCloud, the HSE's guided digital CBT programme, which takes referrals from GPs and other HSE services including Counselling in Primary Care and Jigsaw.

### Can CBT help with anxiety?

CBT is widely used for anxiety, and the HSE recommends CBT-based guided self-help for some types of anxiety, depression, panic disorder and OCD. In counselling with Rosemary, CBT tools for worry and avoidance sit inside a wider conversation about your life. A 50-minute session in Gorey costs €75.

### Can I have CBT-informed sessions online?

Yes. Rosemary offers secure video sessions anywhere in Ireland for €75 for 50 minutes, the same fee as in Gorey. Online sessions need 24 hours' notice to cancel, compared with 48 hours for in-person sessions at Bodhi. Choose the online option when you book, or call 087 458 0150 to ask first.

### What should I bring to the first session?

Nothing is required. Some people like to note one or two recent moments when the pattern showed up, because CBT works best with a specific example. Arrive at Bodhi, 14 Main Street, a few minutes before your 50-minute session. If you use the thought record on this page, you can bring a printed copy.
